Musashi, at this time named Takezō, and his childhood friend, Matahachi, with their dreams of military glory crushed, start on the business of evading search parties and trying to make it back to their home village of Miyamoto. ![]() The story of Musashi's quest to become the greatest swordsman of all time begins, ironically, with him lying among the wounded after the Battle of Sekigahara, which historically marks the beginning of the end for the era of great wars and honorable single combat among Samurai. It's had several adaptions over the years, the two most notable being the Samurai Trilogy of films starring Toshiro Mifune, note Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto, Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple and Samurai III Duel At Ganryu Island and the manga Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue. A long Serial Novel written by Eiji Yoshikawa and published between 19, this novel follows the path of legendary Rōnin Miyamoto Musashi as he slowly transforms from violent thug to Martial Pacifist using the Way of the Sword. Featuring awesome swordfights, epic Character Development, melodramatic loves, thrilling escapes, and thoughtful reflections that don't sound like they came out of a Cracker Jack box, Musashi is perhaps the quintessential samurai epic. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Includes complete audio (streaming or download) for the oral history. The flick needed far more money, to make the scenes in the thirties and forties believable, and the director seemed to settle for first or second takes, because a lot of the scenes were pretty dreadful. It's not the actors fault, one can see some effort on their part, though Barbara Hershey is abysmal as Errol's wife. ![]() ![]() Of course the character is a take off on Flynn, who did indeed show on a similar show, see the movie if your a Flynn Fan.īut unfortunately, this film is pretty badly done. Whenever I think of Flynn I think of that line in "My Favorite Year" where the character Alan Swann says: "I'm not an actor, I'm a star!". I have a soft spot for this movie, if for nothing else it was filmed in the eighties and the subject is Errol Flynn, one of the greatest stars in Hollywood history. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments Democracy in america volume 1![]() More significantly, it is very easy to found a newspaper in America, so they proliferate in all parts of the country and are not centralized. ![]() He notes that newspapers contain many more advertisements in the United States than French newspapers do. Though press freedom is entrenched, Tocqueville argues that the press is “weak” because the country as a whole is “rarely troubled by profound passions” (175). ![]() More fundamentally, they reject the idea that any court could be objective enough to criticize a newspaper and control it. The sovereignty of the people and freedom of the press are therefore two entirely correlative things: censorship and universal suffrage are, on the contrary, two things that contradict each other and cannot be found in the political institutions of the same people for long (174).Īmericans accept press freedom because criticisms of the law are permissible. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments Pluto manga box set![]() ![]() Pluto was a critical and commercial success, winning several awards, including the ninth Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and selling over 8.5 million copies. This aspect the book fails to deliver, as these characters are uniformly bland and one-dimensional, but you could also argue that this is partly due to the shortcomings of his research and lack of embellishment, so perhaps it’s intentional. Much of Devil House is built around Gage Chandler’s findings of the protagonists who were around at the time and were the potential suspects, accomplices, or witnesses. The setting of the killings is a former adult book and video shop which is hugely unpopular with the local residents but a regular hangout with teens. What is fascinating about this is the murders did not make headline news the first time around, even though they took place during the 1980s Satanic Panic era and looked vaguely ritualistic in nature. Gage is seeking his next literary hit and buys the house which was the scene of an unsolved double murder fifteen years earlier. Sound familiar? If you’ve seen Sinister, you bet it does. A true-crime writer buys the house which was previously the scene of a gruesome murder and plans to research and write about it. ![]() Even though the main case is non-supernatural, it still reminded me of the hit film Sinister. ![]() ![]() And so he sets off on his own path through life, a path strewn with conflicting loyalties, love and loss.Spanning three decades and crossing continents, Jhumpa Lahiri's much-anticipated first novel is a triumph of humane story-telling.
